An Up-close Look at the 2013 Ford Fusion

By Cole Q.

The growing number of Ford Fusion customers, as well as owners of competing vehicles, will have more reasons than ever to check out the all-new 2013 Ford Fusion the debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. We caught up with John Jraiche, Chief Program Manager for the Ford Fusion, at the show and asked him to highlight some of the technology in the new model.

We also flew four Ford fans out to Detroit for the show, and when we unveiled the Fusion, they got to check it out first-hand. You can read more about this in the article, “Check Out the Ford Social Fans We’re Bringing to Detroit!” We will post a video with their reactions next week.

The 2013 Ford Fusion will give customers the power of choice with the widest-ever portfolio of fuel-efficient powertrains ever offer in the Fusion, including EcoBoost™, hybrid and plug-in hybrid engines; automatic and manual transmission offerings; and auto start stop technology.  In fact, the new Fusion is the first sedan to offer gasoline, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, each with expected top fuel economy, underscoring Ford’s commitment to give customers the power of choice.

The new car is flush with more than just powertrain options. With seven must-have technologies, including a Lane Keeping System, adaptive cruise control, active park assist and MyFord Touch®, the all-new Ford Fusion shows how Ford is delivering features customers truly want and value.

The all-new Fusion also offers an unprecedented portfolio of driver assistance and convenience technologies based on sensors, cameras and radar that enable the car to see and respond including:
  • Lane Keeping System: This class-exclusive technology consists of three elements to help a driver maintain proper lane position. Using a small, forward-facing camera behind the inside rearview mirror, the system “looks” down the road, monitoring lane lines to determine that the car is on course. The system will alert a driver if drowsiness or erratic lane-keeping is detected. The second element warns a driver with a steering wheel vibration if the Fusion drifts too close to lane markings. Finally, lane keeping aid will actually apply pressure on the steering to help bring the car back into proper lane position

  • Adaptive cruise control: Using forward-looking radar, this system “looks” down the road when activated, slowing the Fusion when slower traffic is detected ahead. Adaptive cruise control enables collision warning with brake support to help slow the car if the potential of a crash is detected

  • Active park assist: Employing sensors, this technology can identify a suitable parallel parking space, calculate the trajectory and steer the car to properly position it within the spot. All a driver need do is operate accelerator and brake pedals

  • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with cross-traffic alert: Sensors in both Fusion rear quarter-panels are able to detect traffic in a driver’s blind spot, providing both audible and visual warnings if traffic – unseen by the driver – is detected. BLIS technology enables cross-traffic alert, warning the driver of oncoming traffic when backing out of a parking space with obstructed views, such as between two large vans

The 2013 Ford Fusion was revealed to media during the auto show on January 9, 2012, and you can read, “First Look at the 2013 Ford Fusion,” to learn more about the car.

We want to know what you think about the new Fusion. Use the form below to send us your thoughts, and feel free to add a photo or video if you would like.

Come on ford put a V6 in it fusion SVT V6 and make it affordable not like 35k like the taurus sho make it in the 25k range to start off.
onwuka patrickneri c 01/13/2012
oh yeah it is Good for the World
T Craig P71CV 01/13/2012
The 2013 Fusion is a very nice looking car, but there is one thing missing - where is the V6 engine? Come on Ford, drop a V6 in the 2013 model!
Bob Johann 01/13/2012
The nose definitely looks like an Aston, which is not a bad thing. What I want to know is if one of the powertrain options includes a true manual transmission with the high horsepower engine and highly optioned interior. I must have a manual transmission (like in my SVT Contour) and I want high horsepower and creature comforts, not the entry level low power 4 banger. Without a true manual, I am not a buyer of this car regardless of the looks and technology. I want to drive the car, I don't want it driving me.
Jesús M. Bauzó Moreno 01/12/2012
The new Ford Fusion is a great vehicle... but it needs a V6 Engine!
Ahmed S Al-ballam 01/12/2012
Ford Mondeo is better than the Ford Fusion 2013

Ford Mondeo Excellent %100

Ford Fusion acceptable %0
Brian Snyder 01/12/2012
I have been selling Fords for almost 5 years and I guarantee this car will take off. Can't wait for them to hit the showroom!
Vic Cooper 01/12/2012
Needs a SHO edition.
Jimmy Sesto 01/11/2012
I sell cars for Ford and have done so since 1997 when I was 22 years old and I love Ford and absolutely love the new Fusion. You can certainly see the Aston Martin influence in the front fascia, then again Ford was the primary owner of Aston Martin until recently. As much as I like this new car I do hate that the photos have been released already because it will be very hard for me to sell new Fusions now until the 2013's arrive later in the year.
Ryan Crysler 01/11/2012
Really great stuff!
Tabalan John Ralph 01/11/2012
nice Car......
shellby bretschneider 01/11/2012
Looks great!!!
Kimberly Fleury 01/11/2012
It's pretty and I like the features, but I have a long walk to even use the remote starter on my 2003 ZX2. I doubt the apartment complex management will allow me to string a power charging cord across the sidewalk in front of my car all the way into my apartment. Besides, it would just leave my transportation open to vandalism by teens sowing wild oats. They don't need the temptation, I don't need the hassle. So, no Fusion in my future.
Sean O Keeffe 01/11/2012
AWD is a great option i am looking forward to seeing its sister the mondeo when it arrives on this side of the pond. Ford is definitly leading the way .Greetings from Co. Cork Ireland the birth place of Henry
Todd Haugh 01/11/2012
I'm soon to be in the market for a new car -- likely a Fusion -- and the updated Fusions will certainly keep me in the market for one.
Marcus Shelton 01/11/2012
I like the new look of this new car and it has the style people are missing.
Matthew Hicks 01/11/2012
The old Fusion was a nice car, but let's face it, now it looks like the box in which the new Fusion was delivered. I will definitely consider the Fusion when I replace my VW in a few years. Who would have thought- Ford's styling is now more European-influenced than VW! I do hope Ford will offer the wagon here in the U.S., because then the Fusion will definitely be my first choice.
Tyler Jacques 01/11/2012
It reminds me of the new focus, but yet it also reminds me of the new taurus. I love it!
Tim Pfister 01/11/2012
I like the electric car, but it needs more then just plug in power, solar baby solar charge with the electric charge as back up.
Michael Striegel 01/11/2012
I think the car looks sweet. With the front end that reminds me of Aston Martin. Looks very sweet and want one. But Ill stick my 2010 Focus for now!!!!!
Alton O'Briant 01/11/2012
This new Fusion is exciting. So many good steps ahve been taken with this car, but the real excitement to me is the plug-in option. Too bad it will be too expensive for the average joe to afford. Ford shoudl be the company that makes the plug in a viable choice . 100mpg car today can have a great impact on the world, but not if you can only sell a million of them. Can Ford innovate a world changer? I think an afforrdable plug would be one.
Mark Hedtke 01/10/2012
Okey, now is the time for All Good Men to Come to the Aid of Their Country, and in this case it is past time for Ford to help free all of us from remaining "Energy Prisoners" in the form of Legacy Power, draining our pocketbooks daily. Build a vehicle for the masses at a price that is both affordable to the everyday worker and versatile in model configuration no different than when Ford put out the Model T, originally. How about it, build a vehicle that can be easily converted to different configurations that is an ALL-EV powered vehicle, a vehicle for the people. In fact, if you were at all nostalgic, I'd name it the Model T of the Future.
Joey David 01/10/2012
Someone at Consumer Reports said the current 2012 Fusion looks like it was something made by a Razor Blade company...the 2013 model is nice, but as a 2011 Fusion owner, the 2013 doesn't give me the 'Wow' factor.
Richard Probst 01/10/2012
Will there be a Lincoln MKZ Energi? Imagine: a luxury plug-in hybrid...
Richard Probst 01/10/2012
Great move to introduce the Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid at CES, during the same week as the Detroit Auto Show. And what a great looking car! How soon can I buy one? Not any 2013 Fusion, mind you, but the plug-in hybrid -- that's what I want!
Mark Flesher 01/10/2012
Has a nice Aston Martin like front end. Niiiiice.
drew 01/10/2012
I lease a 2011 Fusion Sport, which I love, and think the 2013 Fusion is a stunningly beautiful car. However I will not lease one when my current lease is up if the engine lineup stays the same. I flirted with more expensive vehicles from other brands this time but went with Ford because I have always been a Ford man and truly loved the Fusion (and MKZ i might add though I am not that old yet). By killing the V6's and not providing an option that provides at least as much power as the current Sport, I would prefer more, I will have no choice but to look somewhere else next time. Unlike the majority of people Ford apparently thinks want their cars, I care more about horsepower than gas mileage. At least I already own my factory supercharged Mustang, they're probably getting the ax the next time Ford resigns the 'Stang. Drew in Woodhaven MI
Jennifer Johnson Taormina 01/10/2012
I love the new style! It is awesome I want one.
John 01/10/2012
The inside looks okay but that grill is ugly. Can't say I am a big fan over the technology like lane keeping system, adaptive cruise control, active park assist or BLIS. Seems like that just adds to the cost. I would like to see better quality materials on the interior (less hard plastic), better quality seats and less bells and whistles. I will never buy a plug in car. How about a small quiet turbo diesel?
Bradley Ricketts 01/10/2012
Brian, I currently drive a Ford Taurus SHO and, like yourself, do like V-6/V-8 under the hood of my personal vehicle. What Ford is doing is great! They are getting V-6/V-8 power out of smaller power plants by using turbocharging Ecoboost Technology. More low-end torque and better fuel-economy. Its a win-win for Ford!!
dave 01/10/2012
The comment about Austin Martin which was owned by Ford wholly until 2007 and I believe still retains a 15% share in the company. Styling is obviously and probably intentionally to look similar to the Austin Martin.
Akshay Mahesh 01/10/2012
I'm not too happy with the hybrid. 47 is great and all but 180 or so horsepower is NOT. Plus, I feel like it will be heavy. It is bigger afterall. In that case, I will be SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!
Brett Evans 01/10/2012
Throw a 6-speed manual transmission into the 2.0 EcoBoost, turn up the turbo boost, and give us a Fusion SHO!
Brian Roberts 01/10/2012
BTW...the U.S. is supposed to be a primary market, yet now the only U.S. Ford vehicles we will have that aren't just picked from Ford Europe will be the Mustang, Taurus, F-Series, and Explorer. We need V6 and V8 engines with rear-wheel and all-wheel drive. Be American!!!!
Brian Roberts 01/10/2012
Well, I'm a Ford shareholder and owner of a Mustang GT that I will hold on to forever because it was my dad's last car he ever bought. I've owned around 20 new Ford vehicles, mostly Mustangs and trucks. However, this car is ugly. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if the front end looked like the refreshed Taurus. Plus, after the lack of customer service I received over my previous work car, a 2010 Focus, it will take a lot to get me to consider another Ford for a long time. I've bought three new Chrysler products this past year including a new Challenger and the service I have received not only from the dealership, but Chrysler itself has been stellar. Ford needs to take a hard look at this. Nevertheless, I'll never buy a Japanese car and as always...GOD BLESS DETROIT!
Brandon Bergs 01/10/2012
I though the fusion now was really awesome and couldnt be better but it is its funny cuz the grill on this looks like a grill that you cook on haha i have an '03 Taurus and love it,never had a problem with it and wish i could get a 2012 taurus, 2013 Fusion, 2013 Mustang, and a FOrd GTX1!!! Ford rocks
Andrew McWhirter 01/10/2012
no 5.4's anymore Frankie.. but ill have a GT anyday
Callum Green 01/10/2012
Looks the same as the next ford mondeo in England .
N. Rodriguez 01/10/2012
This is all great, but do people really need advanced driving aides such as adaptive cruise control, and a lane keeping system? Aren't people supposed to actally drive their cars prior to letting a computer help them do half the driving?
reggie 01/10/2012
Nice car... I don't like the tail lights though... The front grille is hot....
Frankie Love 01/10/2012
5.4 & 5.0 litre super charged V8 5 litre natural v8 4 litre turbo n natural 6s are our engine choices
Bill Macorkindale 01/10/2012
Current Fusion is good, but this new design is hand-down more attractive, and coupled with the ecoboost, should be a real winner. Been looking for sedan with good mpg over current SUV and may just wait a little longer to check the Fusion out "up close and personal".
Frankie Love 01/10/2012
hey all youse yanks should check out the 2012 ford falcon, but before you get to excited its only for us aussies n our kiwi pets
Zrath Smiley 01/10/2012
I think Ford owns Aston martin. :D
That car looks like a million bucks! If I was forced to get a mid-size sedan boremobile like the Camry, I would totally get this hot new not-boring-at-all Fusion! :)
Robert Zappulla 01/10/2012
I'm surprised Austin Martin hasn't sued them yet.
Fran Bushardt 01/10/2012
It is a tweaking of the 2 door version of the Ford Evos as was previewed in the Nov. 2011 Motor Trend. would love a 2 door version similar to the Evos. Go FORD!!! I have. never owned anything but since 1975 and on my 15th Ford now a 2010 Escape Ltd. Do not like the new redesigned Escape. WOULD NOT BUY THAT THING as I hate the rear of it as they all are getting away from the North American look.
Daniel Bouchard 01/10/2012
Nice Car .. Ford is The Best !!
Michael Hildebrand 01/10/2012
I am sooo in love with this car!
Travis Gage 01/10/2012
i think this might be the car that makes me stop being a "GM for life" kind of guy.. cant wait to test drive it.. looks gorgeous!
Anthony Spencer 01/10/2012
WIth no V6 and the top engine being a 230hp 4 cyl this car will be a disaster.
Where is the wagon versio? Oh wait. Ford only develops wagons and coupes for the European market. Americans need to be satisfied with sedans, SUVs and Mustangs.
Kiran Chandrapaul 01/10/2012
definitively original, it reminds me of a shark... fierce. Hope the performance is good
Loretta Thompson 01/10/2012
Wish I could get one. Beautiful.
Rich Shanks 01/10/2012
Front end is nice. The rest is generic Euro-Japanese.
Brandon 01/10/2012
Wow i was sad that the look now was gonna be gone but it looks even better, i noticed that the 2013 fords dont have the chrome grill but ill grt use to it
Absolutely gorgeous. Aston Martin sedan without the Aston Martin price
Marisa Miller 01/10/2012
Very nice!!!!
Don Falloon 01/10/2012
Check the new Taurus. Its DNA runs rampant here, and that's a good thing. The current Fusion borrows heavily from the Interceptor concept of years ago. This design is bold and muscular. I like it.
Gary Sturrock 01/10/2012
I have a 1986 ford truck with over 400.000 miles on it!!
Andy Corum 01/10/2012
What a disappointment. I'm a Ford man - My 2000 Taurus has 210,000 miles and it's the best car I've ever had. I always considered the Fusion to resemble the early Taurus - or, at least be more closely related to my car vs. the Five Hundred bodies, and the new extremely large body - this to me is not attractive.

Also, I understand that the 2.0 ecoboost will build large horsepower - but, some of us out here like the reliability of a V6. That DOHC Duratec is probably one of the best engines you have ever built. I remember the 1970's - and, larger cars with small engines - it scares me. I can make a V6 last longer with fewer mechanical issues for the 5 mpg I may lose. I get more performance, and a longer life.

The technology on this car is great. All very positive steps. The 2012 Fusion and back was just such a pretty car. The design, the chrome grill - now, we have the best of Europe. :-(
FORD,WHAT A BEAUTIFUL CAR(FUSION)+I love all fords,I have owned all american cars. The only cars i would ever buy.Out of all of them is FORD. Just drive one and you will be hooked.RONNIE
am useing a ford car its reallly nice and comfortable car
Jeaneen Richard 01/10/2012
Beautiful car. I could really use one. I have 3 kids in 3 different schools across the city and put almost 90 miles per day on my car...I need a more gas efficient automobile to get me around town.

Congrats on your fabulous years of success! I have wanted an Edge for so long. I pray 2012 is the year I get my dream come true!!! Your cars guys have really stepped up to the plate. Still trying to win any Ford car.
Adam Clark 01/10/2012
ill trade my 99 Ford Contour for one :D....nah I like it too much
Anton Alexandrovich Koryagin 01/10/2012
"FlancerMartind" !? Nice .. =)
sue kilfoyle 01/10/2012
why does the 2013 energi plug in not come the eco-boost turbo engine ?
William Brutsche 01/10/2012
I understand you are shooting for great MPG, but couldn't you shoe horn in the 300 hp V6 just for grins?.......... :o)
Gary 01/10/2012
Excellent use of technology. I hope the Green versions go really fast!!!
Gary - San Diego
Jules Jules 01/10/2012
impressive desing, I wish it was rear wheel drive, but all wheel is slick.
Jason Frels 01/10/2012
2.0L Turbo + a Manual Transmission and you'll get my business.
The grille is too large and out of proportion; scale it down and chrome it up.
Chris Farrell 01/10/2012
They better get this thing to market, quick! I was planning on buying a Fusion hybrid because of the reviews and price even though I didn't like the look. Now I like the look. So I can't now buy the 2112 model and I need a car!
Don Jr Gunter 01/10/2012
beautiful car indeed but i still think ford is makeing a mistake my killing the Ford Ranger
Sandy Sewell 01/10/2012
I love it my 01 Ford Ranger Edge needs some the fact that it's a hybrid!
Christopher Crouse 01/10/2012
Great sport sleek looks. Kinda like a Jag!! Now, where is the Sport, more horsepower and manual trans. option? It needs to compete with others I thought, so give it more horses. It should atleast be faster than the current V6 Fusion Sport. is an ecoboost I-4 turbo 280 hp too much to ask? 237 HP as the top of the line is not near enough!!! :-(
Brandon Coté 01/10/2012
I love Ford! Great looking car! I love my 2010 Ford Fusion but I may get this. I can't wait to test drive it!
Rob Finley 01/10/2012
I like the Ford trucks not the cars.
Rick Seconds 01/10/2012
I want one with AWD!
It's gorgeous! This is a real male
Brad Krekelberg 01/10/2012
Bravo, Ford! Very sharp car! I also like how the manual is not relegated to the stripper model, but appears higher up in the model line. Now you just need to offer it with the 2.0L EcoBoost!
Frank Cerne 01/10/2012
I don't like the front grill, the 2010 model is much better. Also, the feature that turns the gas engine off when you come to a complete stop, and then restarts when you move, is going to be a mechanical nightmare when it inevitably breaks.
Jamie At Ford 01/10/2012
@Vance – I’m thrilled you love your Ford vehicles! Have you checked out the just-released list of specs? Be sure to do so here: so you can see just how solid built the all-new Fusion truly is. :)

Lars Bohman 01/10/2012
Awesome car
Abdullah Alshammary 01/10/2012
Shaun Edwards 01/10/2012
Looks like the focus. By the 2013 model year we'll have the focus fusion fiesta and escape that all look the same. Guess not a bad thing, seperates the brand. Kinda like when you see a saab or Volvo or BMW going down the road...everyone knows what they are
Carl Warmington 01/10/2012
Beautiful car, great evolution of the Mondeo styling. Just wished Ford did not add the driver LCD gauge cluster. The LCD cluster has its merits in the Hybrids and Electric vehicles, but IMO brings down the premium experience, whereas jewel like speedo and rpm dials match what is a very premium looking interior.
Kevin Omnomnonymous 01/10/2012
ford, i love you guys and your lineup. i really do.
but this re-style is a de-style.
the last fusion was a much better looking car.

A Durango and explorer in same sentence. Dodge is yestertech
Looks like a great new product. Definately will check this out when available at dealer.
John Hansen 01/10/2012
I'm not very happy with Ford Motor Company after my last experience in December. Although I have a Checklist that's signed and dated 12.29.2011 stating that ALL of the features were explained to me, they WEREN'T - and MY signature isn't on the checklist. I'm driving a car, from Bill Marsh Ford in Newtown, PA, that I have NO idea how a LOT of it WORKS. Now I'm back at my church in North Jersey and don't have the time to spend traveling 2 hrs. each way to have someone complete the job they were too busy to complete at the time of delivery. Very disappointing!
Mickaël De Lomez 01/10/2012
Je suis amoureux... Elle sort en France? ^^
Allen 01/10/2012
I'll be the LAST person to criticize something Ford has done, but I'm starting to get the feeling that their cars are obtaining a very similar design to each other. Such as the 2012 Taurus and this Fusion, and even the Focus and Fiesta have those thin headlights. What happened to the extreme designs like the mid 90's Taurus? I think many auto companies are going with the same main general characteristics. MIX IT UP! I am VERY glad that they're putting turbos on their cars and trucks, which is much later than they should have, but hey, money was probably an issue (for both producer and consumer). Still, I think you guys have been doing an exceptional job and I hope you keep it up! I've never been loyal to any other company than Ford.
Rich Strozewski 01/10/2012
Cars are starting to become Fun again....thanks Ford!
Dwayne Desisto 01/10/2012
Bye travis b bye
Dennis Garrett II 01/10/2012
I like the dodge commercal were the Durago pulling the Explorer. Thats whar Ford gets going to front wheel drive Explorer. Quit makeing vehicles looking like KIA's. This is America not South Korea.
Dwayne Desisto 01/10/2012
I love the car it looks awesome is there a manual?

Jim Morrison 01/10/2012
Has an Aston Martin DB7 look to the front end. I like it!
Wade Grenier 01/10/2012
The front end of the ford fusion kinda looks like a maserati
Greg T. Moss 01/10/2012
A much improved design, even though the front looks very Aston, and the rear very Volvo S60. Ford should be proud of advancing the design themes for the brand.
Vance Thomas Muir 01/10/2012
thats what i ment by nothing decent plastic plastic and more plastic, what happend to the old 90's solid built fords they just disapeered
Vance Thomas Muir 01/10/2012
i love my fords but alot of cars of 2009+ are just fibreglass and plastic interior

Can we have a new fusion in uk weve had the same since 2002
Kristina Baur 01/10/2012
Don't knock the 4cylinder EcoBoost I have it in my Explorer and it's awesome, with awesome gas milage.
Nick Elmy 01/10/2012
Absolutely NAILED it with the redesign! Kind of bummed that there is no more V6, I hope the refinement of the 2.0L is similar to 3.5 and not the old 3.0. Can't wait for it to hit the showroom.
Shawn Reinke 01/10/2012
I really, really like the physical appearance of the car, but I would be leery about replacing my v6 with a 4 cylinder. Is performance of the EcoBoost 2.0L supposed to similar to the "old" v6?
Jennifer Zordan 01/10/2012
That's great, but how 'bout some light duty truck stuff??
