Help Turn a Plastic Bottle into Ford Seat Fabric

By Tori T.

We’ve talked on Ford Social before about the use of nonmetal recycled and biobased materials appearing on the inside and outside of Ford vehicles, and the new 2013 Fusion Hybrid and Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid and 2012 Focus Electric are no exceptions.

Unifi’s REPREVE® brand of recycled fibers are used in all three vehicles; REPREVE is made from a hybrid blend of post-industrial and post-consumer waste. Each Focus Electric seating interior contains the equivalent of about 22 recycled plastic bottles made of PET – polyethylene terephthalate, the technical name of the plastic of which the bottles are made – while Fusion hybrids feature nearly 42.

Unifi and Ford are also setting up plastic bottle collection points within Ford facilities in Michigan and California. The bottles could be part of the more than 2 million plastic bottles that will be recycled into REPREVE for fabrics in the Fusion and Focus Electric in their first model years.

Here’s where you come in: When you buy one of these three Ford vehicles, you can automatically give back to eco-charities. The REPREVE Gives Back program has four environmental nonprofits from which you can designate: Keep America Beautiful, Conservation Alliance, American Rivers and Rocky Mountain Institute.

You’ll be able to determine how the funds will be distributed among the four. To vote, you’ll need to “like” REPREVE on Facebook and click the “Gives Back” tab to get a passcode. At www.repreve.com , you can vote for your favorite environmental cause and learn more about REPREVE.

I'm all about protecting the environment and plan to buy a 2013 Fusion hybrid. I just don't know why you need to pass on the echo friendly and comfortable cloth seats to get the luxury package that requires leather seats.

I agree, Ford should test this to see if water stains it like other seats they currently have.

Well I've heard of a ship in a bottle

Scott Potter has a really good idea. It would be nice if they did that.

Why dont they figure out how to make an engine & transmission last before spending time on that. 2 fords 8K in engine and transmission repairs this year due to Ford's flawed engineering

Ford should look at Maserati's site for simplicity in building your own car. More sun roof options would increase sales on the west coast

Guys I found another victim of Ford "Shelley Morrison"

I have two reusable shopping bags made from recycled plastic bottles that I have used for years. I'm in the promotional products business so have many samples of shopping bags. I have used several others but keep going back to the ones made from the bottles because the others self destruct. And I live in Tucson Arizona, keep the bags on my bag seat all the time. The sunlight has no effect on them.

I really like the idea, but I would still never buy anything new because nothing really compares to the durability of my 390 cubic inch v8.

So now fords are literarily garbage

I'd like to see a seat design that would incorporate switchable licensed ford seat covers that could install fairly easy and were fairly easy on the wallet. Change your interior from fabric to plush, to vinyl or step up with a quality leather. Affordable customization or upgrade.

I like the idea, but need to figure out a way so they won't stain or discolor from a drop of water.

Ford Should Put this in all countries as it could cut down manufacturing cost and waste, and save the enviroment , win win situation
