Mustang Story

The year was 1976. I was 7 years old the first time I saw my dream car; it was a 1965 Mustang 2+2 Fastback and the first Mustang I ever saw. I fell in love at first sight.

When my parents couldn’t find me I would often be sitting in the Mustang listening to the radio and pretending to drive. My family owned this car 3 different times; the last time was 1981 when my father declared it would never come back. I thought, “Just wait and see.” This is where my journey begins.

This journey lasted 25 years, tracing the car all over the state of Alabama. From the time I was 12 years old, I would go to auto parts stores, gas stations and dealerships asking if anyone had seen my Mustang. I went anywhere that I thought Mustang folks might be and I would show my pictures to anyone who would stop and look.

By 1985, I had traced the car through 5 different owners and 5 different cities. You might not think that this task was difficult but Alabama did not start titles until 1975 and this car is a 1965. Without a title, you can’t do a title search to find the owner.

The summer I turned 16, I finally found my car but the owners did not want to sell. For the next 20 years I went the owner’s home several times a year to see if he wanted to sell and also to make sure my Mustang was still there.

In 2006 after 25 years and at the age of 37, I finally got the call I had been waiting for: the owner was ready to sell.

I brought my 1965 Mustang home in November 2006. It had been sitting outside in the weather for 20 years. Although it needed everything, the car after several days work started-up. Finally, I was able to drive her; it was worth the wait.
