On November 11, 2011 (11/11/11) my husband and I exited a highway to travel towards my place of work. Seeing flashing lights and an accident, we reentered the highway. Before we were even up to speed again, we drove over a bridge that was covered in ice. I lost control of my vehicle (probably traveling close to 60 mph) and eventually slammed into a guardrail. My husband and I both managed to get out of the car and while we were stunned by the event, we were both essentially injury free. The front crumple zone of the car took the impact as I am sure it was designed to do. Aside from the deployed airbags, the interior was undamaged. It was able to provide a perfect cage of safety for us. Looking at our car it is amazing we walked away with little more than airbag burns on my hands. I credit the design of the Fusion with our health. As a physics teacher, every year I teach my students about the crumple zone of a car and while I never wanted a real life experience with one, I am glad it did its job. Someone commented to me that 11/11/11 was supposed to be lucky, but it wasn’t because we got in an accident. I think 11/11/11 was incredibly lucky because we walked away from it.
