A courier company arranged routes for their trucks that used as many Right Turns versus Left Turns as possible in their daily delivery route. They saved time (no waiting at left turning lights), safety (not turning thru oncoming traffic) and ultimately saved on engine time running, not to mention decreased pollution from idling time at intersection lights.
Why don't Turn by Turn Navigation systems being built into or added to vehicles offer this type of routing as an option? Would require some education of the driving public, it seems strange when you are sometimes turning in the opposite direction to your intended location but circling around has some real advantages.
Ultimately a traffic flow street plan organized on this premise would save space by removing left turning lanes, simplify intersections and speed up traffic flow.
