I am sure you have considered adapting the Mazda low compression [14.0:1] diesel technology to your diesel designs. How about a 4.0 l inline 6cyl diesel in the F250/F350? It should spec out at 430ft-lbs torque translating to 40% better milage than the present 6.7 l Powerstroke.
This would realistically allow tow capacity of 10000 lbs while permitting use as a personal, daily driver when not towing. The mileage would offset the increased initial engine cost, while the reduced need for add-on pollution controls would reduce the production costs.
You can still have the V8 diesel option for the really big boys....
