Why not create diesel (or gas or hydrogen)/electric hybrid trucks, but not with traditional drive train. Instead, have the engine/generator where the engine/transmission goes, and place electric motor planetaries at each wheel, like on the super-heavy-duty mining trucks? There's plenty of room for batteries under the bed floor. This would allow complete control, electronically, of power, wheel slip and braking. You could actually eliminate systems, like ABS, not to mention all those parts that wear, like u-joints, wheel bearings, transfer cases, differentials. The ground clearance could be immense! Each wheel would get EXACTLY the power it needs for traction...no more, no less. Today's powerful computers could handle those algorithms. So many fewer moving parts.
