Shiftable Differential
Since Pick-ips and SUVs tow about 1 to 2 % of the time a great deal of gas mileage could be gained for the fleet by having a differential with two gear ratios; one for normal use and one for towing. Usually the rear end used for vehicles that tow is a higher ratio than for just normal diving use. Simple solution for big gains. Old fords overdrive used to be a differential shift.

John Herron I agree this has to be the next move for better mileage and more pulling power - a split shift differential!
