An interesting architecture for hybrid powertrain
Here after, I would like to point out an interesting architecture for hybrid powertrain which belong to the series -parallel family (same as PRIUS). To summarize: This architecture uses two planetary gear mechanisms for power derivation (3 rotating shafts by mechanism), one dedicated to the high vehicle speed, and the other to the low vehicle speed. That means that we can have two levels for the derived power according with the mechanism in operation. They are built concentric and a specific device allows a smooth permutation between them without jolt or friction. In the previous dual mode architecture, one planetary gear mechanism for power derivation is associated with one or more planetary gear mechanisms for power transmission (2 rotating shafts by mechanism), like in a gearbox, which provide various torques and rotating speeds but with only one level for the derived power. The main advantage is that the electrical propulsion chain (PM generator, rectifier, battery, inverter and PM motor) requires half of the usual power and torque because we can choose the planetary gear mechanism in operation which diverts less power. This possibility has a big impact on the cost of the electrical propulsion chain but also on the global vehicle efficiency because we also reduce the energy multi conversions. This configuration makes also possible to store some kinetic energy in the unavoidable inertia of the generator (for economic reasons it already rotates at high speed). We can easily store or regenerate the kinetic energy of the vehicle up to 50 km/h which is sufficient in the urban drive for regenerative braking. It is a very simple and convenient way to minimize the battery sizing. This arrangement is also useful: to punctually improve the vehicle performances, to protect the battery against over power and to start the ICE. More details is available. This configuration makes also possible to store a certain kinetic energy in the inevitable inertia of the generator (for economic reasons which it already turns at high speed). We can easily store or regenerate the kinetic energy of the vehicle up to 50 km/h which are sufficient in the urban drive for retroactive braking. It is a very simple and convenient manner to reduce the battery to the minimum. This provision is also useful: to punctually improve the performances of vehicle, to protect the battery against the finished power and to begin the ICE.
