Many other cars support a real-time (updates every 1-2 seconds) MPG display as one of the car information options (example: 2005 Toyota Camry has both average mileage and real-time gas mileage display options). I have read that this option is available while in diagnostic/testing mode and would greatly enhance awareness for economical driving habits having it front and center in the gauge cluster.
