Mustang platform Lincoln- aka 21st Century "Cougar"
Consider the possibilities of basing a new model Lincoln on the Mustang platform. After all, with it's most recent leaps in technology and performance, the Mustang platform has far more potential than a simple "pony car". This could well be the sound basis for a high performance luxury car. Not long after the first Mustangs broke new ground, a luxury version was introduced as the Cougar- a masterpiece in it's own rite. Would this not be an apt time to introduce a "Mustang", enhanced with all the Lincoln perks and comforts? Likewise, in much the same manner that the lines of a current Mustang hint at the '67 model, a Lincoln version could recall the vibe of a '67 Cougar. Though with the demise of the Mercury name, retiring the name "Cougar" may be appropriate. Might I suggest the 2013 Lincoln XR7?

Andrew B love the Idea but wouldn't it be better to call it a Lincoln Thunderbird and style it after the 1967 Thunderbird? If they do this there should also be a hard-top convertible version and if it was geared right then it could take on the likes of BMW's 6 series and Mercedes SLKs that retail for close to $100k but at a fraction of that cost.

mark peterson I'm glad I found this page. I think Lincoln should run with a Mustang-based coupe. The name should also stay "Cougar". A Lincoln Cougar sounds great, maybe with the XR7 added like the above comments. This would satisfy a lot of the die hard Cougar fans out there, myself included. The grilles on Mercurys and Lincolns are very similar, so it wouldn't take away anything from Lincoln. And it doesn't have to cost $10,000 more than the Mustang, either. Just having an upscale alternative to the Mustang is what people are looking for.

Paul Dee imho the 'coupe' should be a coupe-cabrio/hard'vert only AND it should have a companion sportsedan. The name I suggest is ZODIAC (an old Fordish name).

Andre Laplante YES YES YES! One problem, itll need an IRS which I remember is only $113 or something per car. But a Lincoln Mark Cougar XR7iX would be awesome. Hidden headlamps, lincoln grill, an ecoboost V6 a 6 speed manual, and rear or all wheel drive!

Jake The idea of axing Mercury comes with the same problem that plagued Buick: the label had become a nursing home car. If there was a chance to save Mercury, it is with a 2011 Cougar XR7. If it were to be branded through Lincoln, I would suggest that both the Cougar XR7 and Mark IX names be used, or even this the 2011 Lincoln Cougar Mark IX.

Peter Could be cool, would be nice if Ford answered GM's new CTS Coupe with a luxury/sport coupe of their own. Infiniti's been selling their G37 based off the Nissan 370Z for awhile with good success.
