What’s better than mashing the throttle on a 411-horsepower 2013 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor and sliding the truck over a dirt race track and over jumps? Having the pros at Miller Motorsports Park show how to do it in a safe and controlled environment, that’s what!
And that’s exactly what the Raptor Assault off-road driving experience is all about. The instructors at Miller Motorsports Park teach you the key techniques to control a vehicle in some of the most exciting off-road scenarios. And at the same time, you get to really understand how capable the Ford Raptor is, and you have the chance to push the limits of the truck under the supervision of professionals.
During the full-day experience, we learned and practiced several off-road driving techniques. One of the most exciting was how to safely jump the Raptor. The instructors showed us how to approach the jump straight (not with the wheels turned to the left or right), keep the power steady until the tires leave the ground, and – when the truck is in the air – let off the throttle so that the truck doesn’t land with the tires spinning faster than ground is moving under them. Yelling “Woohoo” when the truck lands isn’t taught, but comes pretty naturally.
The class also demonstrated the difference in turning the truck on dirt at speed in two-wheel drive compared to four-wheel drive. In two-wheel drive, the instructors show you how to turn the wheel sooner, perform left-foot braking and use the throttle to bring the rear of the truck through the corner pointing in the direction that you want to go. In four-wheel drive, the front tires help pull the truck in the direction you steer, so you don’t turn in as early.
We also learned and experienced how the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor Hill Descent Control™ automatically limits downhill speed when activated, so all you have to do is steer. A set speed is maintained during descent, with braking is automatically applied as needed.
The practicing is the best fun! This school focuses on track time, minimizing classroom time. What better way to learn than to try the techniques? Again and again!
At this time, the Raptor Assault off-road driving experience is offered in two variations: half-day and full-day programs. Both are designed to provide the experience of driving on all of the terrain that the facility has to offer. The half-day program moves quickly and lets you sample the experiences, while the full-day program lets you lets you spend more time with each exercise to hone your off-road driving skills.
