Mustangs on the Oval

JUL
01

Mustang has been involved in many types of motorsports over its history, and this year it is hitting the oval tracks as well. Additionally, it’s the first time that a Ford Mustang has ever been the pace car for this race. A 2011 Mustang GT, powered by the all-new 5.0-liter V8 engine, was the official pace car for this year’s Daytona 500, and it will be leading the start of the next race at the Daytona International Speedway: the Subway Jalapeno 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series event July 2, 2010. There will be a different Mustang in the pack behind the pace car, though, competing in the race.

“From Mustang’s perspective, Mustang has been involved in all forms of motorsports from land speed records to drag racing to sports car racing and recently in drifting, and now we are adding to it, stock car racing,” said Jamie Allison, director, Ford North America Motorsports.

Mustang another significant appearance on a stock-car racing track recently. With fuel-efficient driving techniques, Ford engineers and race driver, David Ragan, demonstrated that a stock production Mustang V6 could run 1,000 laps around Bristol Motor Speedway (533 miles) on a single of tank of fuel. In fact, the Mustang far surpassed that goal, averaging 48.5 mpg on a track while completing 1,457 laps with an average speed of 43.9 mph.

“To see a Mustang post average fuel economy of 48.5 mpg while running at Bristol is impressive,” said Dave Pericak, Mustang Chief Engineer. “The new V-6 engine along with the advanced six-speed transmission in the car is a key element in delivering both fuel economy and performance for Mustang.”

Blogger Wayne Sutton was at the 1000 lap challenge and recorded the event from his perspective. You can read what he experienced, as well as view his videos and image by visiting Ford on Blogs.

chuck r Sorry to hear that, BFG's have been my tire of choice for all but wet weather and snow, great for Slalom and autocross as well as on the street.

Albert J. Francis I couldn't be happier than I am with my 2008 Ford F-150 "King Ranch" crew cab! Best decision I ever made! I was looking for a new pickup in the fall of 2007. I knew it had to be Ford, even though I grew up on Chevy's. This is actually my fifth Ford vehicle since 1985. So you see, I've been converted...OH YEAH! My King Ranch gives me all the comfort of a big, luxury car and yet the convenience of having a pickup. The ride is super and the handling a dream for a truck. Love the sunroof, and I saw it on the local Ford dealership lot and immediately fell in love with it. After a test drive...the hook was set! I couldn't wait to get it home!

Lord Jim Have 1500 miles on the base 2011 stang [V6, Auto] I'm still surprised with the performance, I don't drag start or corner hard but it's a real treat to punch it on the interstate and pass the cotton tops with ease. According to the onboard computer it's getting 24.5 MPG overall. My only complaint, I'd rather have the Michelin tires, B F Goodrich are not my cup of tea.

With the return of the boss 302, the gt500 being better and more powerful than ever, and the vicious rivalry between mustang and camaro, Now, more than ever, the 60's are back in the automotive industry. But there is one detail missing, and it's the mustang Mach 1. With the smooth, classic look of the new mustang bodystyle, it is the perfect platform for the Mach 1 to be made. I think that if ford put a body kit on it with window louvers, rear quarter panel scoops, a cobra jet intake hood, and more to give it that classic 1969 muscle car look, it could be made to be something great!
