Making the Impossible Possible with a 2010 Ford Mustang

JUL
21

What is it like for a man to drive a 2010 Ford Mustang convertible 20 years after he lost his sight? That man is Roger Keeney. What would it be like to be in the car with Roger? You can ask racing legend Tommy Kendall. He was there. Or you can watch the video below to come along for the ride of a lifetime.

But Roger didn’t stop there. He shared his opportunity to drive the 2010 Mustang in the ‘10 Unleashed program with others who have lost their sight in coordination Arizona Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Some people there had never driven a car before. Hear and watch their Ford story as they take the drive of a lifetime. It will change how you view your next drive in a Mustang.

By participating in “The ‘10 Unleashed” promotion, which asked people to describe their ultimate Mustang dream experience in 250 words or less, Roger was selected to make his dream come true.

Roger took a brand-new 2010 Ford Mustang convertible on an amazing ride, doing donuts on the pavement and attaining speeds of up to 90 mph. A video diary chronicling his extraordinary ride can be viewed at www.the2010mustang.com

“When I got the phone call from Ford saying that I had won, I thought someone was playing a joke on me,” said Keeney, who lost his sight in a farming accident.

We flew Keeney down to the Ford Proving Grounds just outside of Phoenix, Ariz. With safety their number one concern, the Mustang team arranged for former professional racer Tommy Kendall to ride shotgun in the car.

“The most life-changing thing you can do for folks with disabilities is put them in a situation that everyone else has told them is impossible. The experience for me in the Mustang with Tommy Kendall next to me and driving that wonderful automobile was really great,” Roger added.

Ford Motor Company is giving consumers the opportunity to get in touch with their Mustang side through The ‘10 Unleashed campaign, part of its new 2010 Ford Mustang launch. Through Aug. 15, consumers will have the opportunity to live out their ultimate experience behind the wheel of a 2010 Ford Mustang – whether drifting in Japan like world champion Vaughn Gittin, Jr. or customizing a new Mustang using Ford Racing Performance Parts.

In addition to this video introduction, you can view a video diary chronicling his extraordinary ride at http://www.fordvehicles.com/the2010mustang/

Ray Truant Congrats on putting the legally blind in cars. This only confirms my suspicions about most drivers.

Daniel C What an incredible story. The way he drove that Mustang was with more skill and precision than most people do who have perfect vision. That was a very emotional video in many ways. As an '01 Mustang owner, Good job Ford on the '10!

William Geibel I am truely impressed with what Ford is doing today. I started out driving another manufacturer's vehicles as a kid but have a fleet of nine Ford vehicles today and will drive nothing else. Keep up the good work!

Jay Ward Susan -- Many thanks for your positive comments and your continued support of Ford. I am glad you are enjoying your Freestyle. As you may know, we changed the Freestyle over to the Taurus X. Since then, we also bought out the new Ford Flex Crossover which also seats up to 7 with very distinctive styling and a wonderful interior. As such, we chose to focus our attention on the Flex and discontinue the Taurus X. I hope you will have a chance to check out the Flex as it has had fantastic reviews and owners love them. Ford has done a great job creating 4-banger engines that are fuel efficient, reliable, and fairly high performing; however, though these engines will outperform higher displacement v6 engines, they will most likely cost a more due to the use of turbo chassis, while remaining just a bit more fuel efficient. However I see that these deficiencies aren't as potent within v6 Ecoboost engines when compared to v8 engines, so my idea is that Ford should create a low displacement v8 engine to replace the 4 cylinder Ecoboost motors within select vehicles (like the Taurus, and Fusion). My idea of this low displacement v8 is along the lines of a naturally aspirated 260ci motor, with Ti-VCT and direct injection for maximum performance and fuel efficiency, while costing less than or equal to the price of a 4-cylinder Ecoboost motor. With this, Ford can decrease the amount 4-banger options, and increase the amount of v6 Ecoboost, and naturally aspirated v8 options which I think would prove to be a great marketing strategy. I also think this would prove to be a great new engine option for the Ford Mustang, and a great base engine for a new small car with a RWD setup, to compete with the Dodge Dart, and Chevrolet Code 130R.
