Ask Ford
Q.

Hey there, I wanted to know what the name Mach means that's used with the old Ford Mustangs?

A.

The name Mach was chosen to highlight our high-performance Mustang.
Mach is defined as: (noun) a number indicating the ratio of the speed of an object
to the speed of sound in the medium through which the object is moving.

Legend Actually, while E.W. did define for you, the Mach 1 is the definition for the speed of sound. The terminology was used as a marketing technique to promote the higher performance level in some Mustangs. Started in the early 1970's , continued off & on  for many years and was a "custom" performance package. I would check with Ford, but the Boss 302 is a similar performance package, nowadays.Hope this helps !
